The foreign minister of Mauritania meets with the vice minister of foreign affairs.

Saudi Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eng. Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, met with Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, in Nouakchott on the sidelines of the third consultative meeting on Sudan’s peace efforts.

Nouakchott, December 19, 2024 – In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Eng. Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, held a productive meeting today with the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. This important discussion took place on the sidelines of the third consultative meeting aimed at enhancing the coordination of peace initiatives and efforts for Sudan, held in Nouakchott, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.


During the meeting, the two leaders engaged in a thorough review of the strong bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Mauritania, emphasizing ways to further strengthen cooperation across various fields. They explored potential areas of collaboration in sectors such as trade, economic development, security, and cultural exchange, with a focus on achieving the shared goals and mutual interests of the two nations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties, recognizing the importance of a robust partnership in promoting stability and prosperity within the region.


In addition to discussing bilateral matters, the two officials also addressed key regional and international developments. They exchanged views on the current situation in Sudan and the ongoing peace efforts to resolve the conflict, recognizing the vital role that both Saudi Arabia and Mauritania can play in contributing to a peaceful resolution. Their conversation also extended to broader geopolitical issues, reflecting the two countries’ shared interest in promoting regional stability, security, and cooperation.


The meeting was attended by Saudi Ambassador to Mauritania, Dr. Abdelaziz bin Abdullah Raqabi, whose presence underscored Saudi Arabia’s strong diplomatic engagement in the region. Dr. Raqabi’s participation highlighted the Kingdom’s continued support for efforts to strengthen its relationship with Mauritania and to foster stability in the wider Sahel and North Africa regions.


The consultative meeting on Sudan, which was the backdrop for the bilateral discussions, provided an essential platform for regional actors to collaborate on peace initiatives, particularly in Sudan. This diplomatic exchange further exemplified the strong diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Mauritania, as both countries continue to work closely together to address regional challenges and support lasting peace and development in Sudan.
