RIYADH, March 28, 2025 – Thursday marked the second anniversary of the Saudi Green Initiative, a nationwide program aimed at increasing environmental awareness and encouraging people to contribute to a healthier future for upcoming generations.
The initiative’s goal to unite people and enhance community engagement is vital for improving the quality of life for all citizens and residents, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's sustainable development goals.
"The actions we take today will define the environmental legacy we leave behind," said Dr. Khaled Al-Abdulkader, CEO of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, in an interview with Arab News.
He praised Saudi Arabia’s "bold leadership, pioneering strategies, and unwavering commitment to sustainability."
Launched in 2023, the initiative seeks to align sustainable programs with the nation’s broader green objectives, such as reducing toxic emissions, improving afforestation, land restoration, and preserving ecosystems both on land and at sea.
The initiative reflects the Kingdom’s leadership in sustainability, aiming to place Saudi Arabia at the forefront of green development locally and globally.
In December, Saudi Arabia's role in environmental protection was emphasized when it hosted the 16th session of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), offering a platform for global leaders to discuss environmental challenges and green transformation strategies.
Locally, the Kingdom has launched several campaigns to raise awareness about sustainable practices, including Ramadan of Goodness, which encourages reducing food waste and promoting resource conservation, such as electricity and water usage during the holy month.
The Saudi Green Initiative includes over 85 environmental and green development programs, such as rehabilitating 18,000 hectares of degraded land and reintroducing more than 7,500 endangered species through breeding efforts.
