The Northern Borders Region's Need for Traditional Fur Clothing Is Increased by Cold Weather

Surge in Demand for Traditional Furs: As temperatures in Saudi Arabia's Northern Borders region approach freezing, there is a rising demand for traditional handmade fur garments, prized for their warmth and luxurious texture.

As the temperatures in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region dip to near freezing levels during the winter months, demand for traditional fur garments has surged, highlighting a deep cultural connection to heritage craftsmanship and the practical need for warmth. These heritage pieces, revered for both their exceptional warmth and intricate design, have become highly sought after by residents and visitors alike.

Among the most desirable furs are those crafted from the skin and wool of young sheep. The lightweight yet soft nature of these garments makes them particularly popular with the elderly, who prize the combination of comfort and warmth that these furs provide. Additionally, furs made from thick sheep wool are also in high demand, providing added insulation during the harsh winter months.

A recent field visit by the Saudi Press Agency to local fur shops in Arar, a key city in the Northern Borders region, revealed the careful craftsmanship behind these traditional garments. Sellers emphasized the painstaking process involved in creating each piece, which requires a high degree of skill and dedication. The production process involves several critical stages, including skinning the animals, carding (or cleaning) the wool to ensure softness and purity, and then meticulously sewing the pieces together. This intricate work can take anywhere from seven to ten days to complete, reflecting the complexity and precision required.

Despite the time-consuming nature of these handmade garments, they remain highly prized in the region, with demand remaining strong even in the face of less expensive imported artificial furs. While artificial furs are available at a lower cost, they do not replicate the warmth and luxury of the traditional handmade varieties, which are embedded with cultural significance.

The Northern Borders region, which includes Turaif—often regarded as the coldest governorate in Saudi Arabia—experiences some of the harshest winters in the Kingdom. The region’s frigid temperatures make traditional fur garments not only a symbol of cultural pride but a vital necessity for those enduring the cold. With their luxurious textures and remarkable insulating qualities, these garments continue to be treasured by many as an essential part of the region’s winter attire.
