UN Human Rights Experts: International Order is Collapsing in Gaza

Geneva, October 11, 2024 – In a powerful statement, 37 UN Human Rights Rapporteurs condemned the escalating violence in Gaza, labeling it as genocidal and indicative of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment against the Palestinian population. The rapporteurs denounced the complete blockade imposed on Gaza, which has resulted in the denial of essential resources such as electricity, water, food, and fuel. They described the situation as a comprehensive attack on what they termed the "largest open prison in the current era."

This statement was released on the first anniversary of the onset of Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip. The UN rapporteurs highlighted a troubling and deliberate pattern of attacks that they believe poses a significant threat to the very existence of the Palestinian people. Furthermore, they expressed concern that the implications of these actions may extend beyond Gaza, potentially affecting Lebanon and leading to wider regional instability.

The experts urged an immediate cessation of the ongoing cycle of violence and destruction, calling for the release of hostages and detainees. They stressed the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to reach those affected by the conflict, as well as a comprehensive approach to addressing the profound grief, loss, and collective trauma experienced by the population. The rapporteurs emphasized the necessity of adhering to international law and urged the global community to recalibrate its focus towards achieving justice and freedom for all people involved in the conflict.

The call from the UN rapporteurs serves as a stark reminder of the urgent humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and highlights the critical need for international attention and action to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people while upholding the principles of human rights and dignity.
