Cartagena, November 16, 2024 – In a prestigious announcement at the 122nd session of the UN Tourism Executive Council in Cartagena, Colombia, the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO) named Abo Noghta Castles in Tabab, a historic town in Saudi Arabia’s Aseer region, as one of the “Best Tourism Villages for 2024.” The honor was bestowed upon the ancient site during a ceremony attended by global tourism leaders, including Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb.

The recognition of Abo Noghta Castles marks a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector, showcasing the Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage and historical landmarks. Minister Al Khateeb expressed his pride in the recognition, stating that it underscores the deep historical and cultural value of Saudi Arabia’s lesser-known yet equally significant tourist destinations. “This inclusion highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to offering travelers unique environmental, cultural, and historical experiences,” he remarked. The minister emphasized that the recognition aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s broader vision of positioning itself as a leading global tourism destination, promoting the country’s diverse attractions to international audiences.

Al Khateeb also acknowledged the concerted efforts of various governmental agencies in ensuring the successful nomination of Abo Noghta Castles. The Ministry of Tourism, in close collaboration with other departments, worked tirelessly to preserve and promote the site, ensuring it met the criteria for the UNWTO’s prestigious list. “This achievement is a testament to the Kingdom’s dedication to preserving its rural heritage and sharing these treasures with the world,” Al Khateeb said.

Abo Noghta Castles, located in the town of Tabab, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Abha and perched at an elevation of 2,400 meters above sea level, stand as one of the most iconic historical sites in the region. Comprising six fortresses and palaces built from mountain stone, the castles embody the authentic heritage of the Aseer region. Situated along the scenic Wadi Tabb Al-Khasib, the castles provide visitors with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, seamlessly blending history with natural beauty. The historical significance of the site, which has stood for centuries, further cements its place as a vital part of the region’s cultural identity.

Tabab itself is a rich cultural hub, home to over 150 villages nestled within picturesque valleys such as Wadi Tabab, Al-Mughoth, and Dubwai. Known for its fertile lands and agricultural productivity, the town produces seasonal crops that add to its appeal as a tourism destination. The town’s landscape is dotted with ancient landmarks, including mosques, castles, and palaces in villages like Al-Hudhud, Zeina, and Al-Gaul, which continue to attract visitors interested in experiencing the region’s deep-rooted cultural heritage.

The recognition of Abo Noghta Castles as one of the “Best Tourism Villages” is part of an ongoing initiative by the UNWTO to highlight rural destinations that utilize tourism as a driver for sustainable development. Through this program, the UNWTO seeks to promote economic growth, generate employment, and preserve cultural traditions, all while encouraging innovation in rural areas. By being named to this prestigious list, Abo Noghta Castles not only celebrates its historical and cultural significance but also reinforces its commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

The site’s inclusion in the Best Tourism Villages initiative further aligns with Saudi Arabia’s goals to meet the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus on sustainability at Abo Noghta Castles ensures that tourism at the site contributes positively to the local community by creating job opportunities, fostering economic growth, and protecting the environment. This recognition serves as a testament to the Kingdom’s dedication to preserving its cultural and natural heritage, while simultaneously driving growth and innovation within its tourism sector.

Through its strategic development efforts and commitment to sustainability, Saudi Arabia continues to position itself as a major player on the global tourism map, offering travelers a wide range of authentic experiences while promoting the conservation of its rich cultural and environmental resources.
