Under Patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Eastern Region Governor Opens 6th UNESCO ICLC Monday

Jubail, December 2, 2024 – The sixth International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC 6) is set to commence today under the esteemed patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The inauguration of this prestigious conference will be led by Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Eastern Region, marking the start of an important event in Jubail Industrial City from December 2 to 5, 2024.


Organized by the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, the ICLC 6 aims to bring together city leaders, educators, and experts from around the world to explore and promote lifelong learning initiatives and their integral role in sustainable development. The city of Jubail, known for its rapid growth and commitment to development, is honored to host this global gathering, further cementing its place as a leader in education and environmental sustainability.


In a press conference held by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, Prof. Fadye Al Fayad, the general supervisor of the conference committees, highlighted Jubail’s pivotal role in this event. He underscored that the city’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities not only elevates its educational initiatives but also reinforces its commitment to linking education with environmental sustainability. “Jubail’s development into a model for promoting lifelong learning and its integration of education with sustainable environmental practices perfectly aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030,” said Al Fayad.


He added that the conference will showcase Jubail’s strategic development as an innovative educational city, emphasizing the city’s efforts in fostering sustainability through education. The Royal Commission’s vision is to build cities that serve as global role models, combining environmental development with quality of life improvements.


In addition to its focus on lifelong learning, the conference will feature discussions on how cities can contribute to addressing global challenges, particularly climate change. Isabell Kempf, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, expressed her gratitude to Saudi Arabia for hosting the event, highlighting the opportunity to share expertise on how cities can accelerate progress on climate change under the Paris Climate Agreement framework. The event also offers a significant platform for cities around the world to exchange best practices and explore solutions for a more sustainable future.
