Taif, December 5, 2024 — The cultural significance of Taif roses, known for their delicate petals, aromatic oils, and enchanting fragrances, has been officially acknowledged with their inscription on the United Nations Economic, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This prestigious recognition highlights the centuries-old tradition of cultivating and utilizing these roses, which have become emblematic of the Taif region's rich cultural history and its global impact.
Nestled in the picturesque Al-Hada Mountains and surrounding wadis, Taif roses thrive in a unique environment that has long been ideal for their cultivation. Over generations, local communities have refined the art of growing, harvesting, and distilling these flowers, passing down knowledge and techniques that have been integral to both the region's economy and cultural identity. The rose farms, which cover the heights of Taif, are not just an agricultural pursuit but a symbol of the region's heritage and tradition, deeply ingrained in the social and cultural fabric of the area.
The traditional process of distilling Taif rose oil is a fine art passed down through generations, involving copper pots for distillation to ensure a high-quality product. The rose water and rose oil produced in Taif are highly sought after worldwide, especially the prized rose oil, which is among the most expensive oils on the market. The roses play an integral role in various cultural and religious practices, including being used in the annual washing of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah, further cementing their cultural and spiritual importance.
Local farmer Raddad Al-Talhi explained that the cultivation of Taif roses has not only preserved tradition but also evolved into a lucrative investment. With over 910 farms spread across the Taif Governorate, approximately 550 million roses are harvested annually. The growing popularity of the roses has created a booming industry, valued at more than SAR 64 million. More than 70 factories across the region produce over 80 different rose-based products, underscoring the global appeal and commercial viability of the Taif rose.
This UNESCO listing recognizes not only the economic importance of the Taif rose but also its role in enhancing the Kingdom's cultural diplomacy. The global recognition of the Taif rose as part of Saudi Arabia’s intangible heritage underscores the country's commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural assets while ensuring their sustainability for future generations. This achievement is also in alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which seeks to foster cultural heritage preservation and enhance Saudi Arabia's global presence on the cultural stage.
