Gaza, January 22, 2024, The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has issued a grave warning concerning the rampant spread of infectious diseases among displaced individuals seeking shelter in Gaza Strip's refuge centers. The ongoing Israeli bombing, persisting for an uninterrupted 108 days, has forced approximately 1.9 million Palestinians to flee their homes.
The dire situation is exacerbated by the collapse of hospitals and health centers in Gaza Strip, attributed to a severe shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies, as reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Compounding the crisis is the staggering number of casualties, with around 450,000 individuals wounded or ailing, including 350,000 grappling with chronic conditions such as kidney failure, diabetes, and cancer.
The urgency of the matter demands immediate attention, and the Palestinian Ministry of Health has called for swift international intervention. Additionally, they have appealed for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate the transfer of approximately 6,200 wounded individuals from Gaza Strip. This intervention is crucial in light of the widespread destruction of the health system resulting from the prolonged occupation. The situation underscores the pressing need for coordinated efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and alleviate the suffering of the affected population.
