US Special Envoy for Sudan Meets with Saudi Foreign Affairs Vice Minister

Eng. Waleed El-Khereiji, Saudi Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with US Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on the sidelines of the third consultative meeting on Sudan’s peace initiatives.

Nouakchott, December 20, 2024Eng. Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, Saudi Arabia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, met today with Tom Perriello, the US Special Envoy for Sudan, in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the third consultative meeting focused on enhancing coordination of peace initiatives and efforts for Sudan, which brought together key international stakeholders working toward a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis in Sudan.


During the discussions, the two diplomats reviewed the current situation in Sudan, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to address the humanitarian and political challenges facing the country. Both parties highlighted their shared commitment to supporting Sudan’s transition toward lasting peace and stability. The meeting provided an important opportunity for both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States to reaffirm their commitment to working together in the pursuit of peace in Sudan, reinforcing their ongoing diplomatic cooperation on regional issues of mutual interest.


In addition to the central focus on Sudan, the talks also explored the broader dynamics of bilateral cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the United States, particularly in the context of regional peace efforts. The two officials discussed ways to further strengthen their collaboration in addressing not only the Sudanese crisis but also other key issues within the Horn of Africa region and beyond. The discussions were framed by the importance of a coordinated, multilateral approach to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, which involves various international and regional actors.


The meeting was also attended by Dr. Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Raqabi, Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Mauritania, who contributed to the dialogue and provided additional context regarding Saudi Arabia’s role in supporting Sudan's peace efforts. The Saudi delegation emphasized the Kingdom’s continued engagement in regional stability and humanitarian efforts, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s longstanding support for peace processes in Sudan and its broader commitment to international peacebuilding initiatives.


This high-level meeting underscores the growing collaboration between Saudi Arabia and the United States in addressing regional crises, particularly in Sudan. As the situation in Sudan remains complex, both countries are working together to ensure that their diplomatic, humanitarian, and peace efforts are aligned, with the goal of achieving a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for the people of Sudan.
