March 27, 2025 - JuJu Watkins, a star for top-seeded Southern California, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of their NCAA Tournament game against Mississippi State. Watkins, who was driving to the basket, collapsed after her knee bent awkwardly while planting her right leg. She was in visible pain as her teammates gathered around her. Coach Lindsay Gottlieb expressed how shaken she was by the incident. A team spokesperson later confirmed Watkins would need surgery and rehabilitation. The crowd at the Galen Center fell silent as USC’s staff attended to Watkins, who averages 24.6 points per game. Despite the injury, USC went on to win 96–59, advancing to the Sweet 16.
Mississippi State coach Sam Purcell expressed sympathy for Watkins, emphasizing the impact of her injury on women’s basketball. Watkins had a stellar freshman year, setting a national scoring record with 920 points, and had started every game of the season. USC’s victory over Mississippi State came despite Watkins’ injury, with the crowd showing strong support for her, loudly booing Mississippi State during the game. After Watkins’ injury, USC guard Malia Samuels also suffered a minor injury but continued playing. The Trojans remained focused, and Kiki Iriafen’s 36 points helped secure the win. Watkins had struggled with minor injuries earlier in the season but continued playing through them, maintaining a positive attitude.
