Weather advisory: Saudi Arabia expects moderate to heavy thunderstorms, torrential rains

Riyadh, February 08, 2024, The National Center for Meteorology has issued a weather advisory indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy thunderstorms accompanied by torrential rains across several regions of Saudi Arabia. These include parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah, with potential thunderstorm rain also forecasted for southern areas of Riyadh, Eastern regions, and parts of the Najran region. Additionally, fog formation is anticipated in the highlands of these regions.

Over the Red Sea, varying wind patterns are expected, ranging from northeasterly to northwesterly winds reaching speeds of 15-45 km/h in the northern part, northwesterly to southwesterly winds at 12-35 km/h in the central part, and southeasterly to southwesterly winds at 10-30 km/h in the southern part. Wind speeds may increase up to 50 km/h in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, potentially leading to the formation of rainy thunderclouds in central and southern areas. Wave heights are predicted to range from one to over two meters in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, with sea conditions varying from calm to wavy.

In the Arabian Gulf, winds are forecasted to be northerly to northwesterly, with speeds reaching 15-40 km/h. Wave heights are expected to range from one to two meters, and sea conditions are anticipated to be calm to wavy.
