WHO resumes operations at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Gaza; staff increased significantly

Geneva, February 12, 2024, The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the resumption of operations at Al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza, a significant development considering that just a month ago, the hospital was managed by only five doctors. Currently, the hospital is staffed by 300 doctors and 400 nurses.

WHO has played a crucial role in ensuring the hospital's functionality by delivering essential supplies. This includes enough medicines and vaccines for approximately 3,700 people, as well as supplies for treating injuries and childbirths, which have been provided by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Despite these efforts, Al-Aqsa Hospital continues to face challenges. With 270 beds, the hospital is currently treating 400 patients, including 5,000 displaced individuals seeking refuge. To accommodate the high demand, two adjacent schools have been repurposed to provide additional space for 300 patients.

WHO emphasizes that the hospital still urgently requires additional resources, including beds, surgical equipment, anesthetics, and kidney dialysis supplies.

Moreover, WHO has called for the protection of health facilities in Gaza, emphasizing that they should not be targeted. The organization also urges safe access to health services for the population, particularly amidst the collapse of the health system in the Gaza Strip.
