Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – January 30, 2025 – The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) convened a high-level meeting at the JW Marriott Hotel in Riyadh to discuss the regulation and governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The event, which saw the participation of over 400 key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, underscored the rapid growth of AI technologies, which are reshaping industries and transforming economies on a global scale.

This significant gathering reflects SDAIA’s continued commitment to fostering a well-regulated, innovative, and sustainable AI ecosystem within the Kingdom. As the central body responsible for overseeing the regulation of data and AI, SDAIA plays a pivotal role in shaping national policies, setting standards, and implementing governance frameworks that ensure the safe, ethical, and effective use of AI technologies. The meeting emphasized the importance of developing policies and regulations that address the evolving landscape of AI and the challenges it presents to industries, governments, and society.

The discussions delved into a range of critical topics related to AI governance. Among the key areas addressed were SDAIA’s own AI governance frameworks and the principles that guide AI regulation within the Kingdom. Participants also had the opportunity to share insights on the experiences of AI offices within various government and private entities, providing valuable perspectives on the practical implementation of AI regulations across different sectors.

Moreover, the event featured discussions on the role of international specifications and standards in shaping AI regulation. Experts highlighted the need for collaboration and knowledge sharing across borders to ensure that AI governance frameworks are robust, adaptable, and aligned with global best practices. The meeting also explored the achievements and challenges faced by entities involved in AI governance, from both a regulatory and operational standpoint.

One of the key outcomes of the event was the introduction of SDAIA's innovative Incentive Badges, designed to evaluate and recognize organizations based on their maturity in AI ethics, governance, and implementation. These badges, awarded at five levels—Aware, Adopting, Compliant, Assured, and Pioneer—serve as a certification that reflects an entity’s commitment to responsible and advanced AI practices. The certification is valid for one year and acts as a benchmark for organizations striving to achieve excellence in AI governance.

In addition to AI governance, the meeting also focused on aligning educational programs with the growing demand for AI expertise. SDAIA, in partnership with the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC), launched the Saudi Academic Framework for AI Qualifications (Education Intelligence) Alignment Program. This program is designed to ensure that academic institutions in Saudi Arabia align their AI-related curricula with the Saudi Academic Framework for AI Qualifications, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to meet global standards in AI education. The initiative aims to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s position as a leader in AI education and talent development, preparing the next generation of professionals to drive innovation in AI technologies.

The meeting also provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the future direction of AI regulation in Saudi Arabia. Attendees worked collaboratively to identify strategic priorities and actions that would support the development of a comprehensive regulatory environment for AI, positioning the Kingdom at the forefront of AI governance globally.

As AI continues to play an increasingly influential role in reshaping industries and societies worldwide, SDAIA’s efforts to establish a clear and effective regulatory framework are vital to ensuring that the Kingdom remains a global leader in AI innovation, ethical practices, and technological advancement. This gathering marked another step forward in Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plan to harness the potential of AI, driving sustainable development and fostering a knowledge-driven economy in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
