Riyadh, January 20, 2025 – The Saudi Film Commission has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering the art cinema sector, emphasizing its crucial role in not only promoting culture but also in developing the skills of filmmakers and artists. This initiative includes a diverse series of local and international workshops, as well as cinematic events designed to foster creative expression, all while conveying meaningful cultural messages that go beyond the scope of conventional commercial films.
Domestically, the initiative has already made significant strides, with the Film Commission collaborating with 11 local entities to organize 10 workshops in Jeddah. These workshops have successfully enhanced the skills of 27 trainees, providing them with valuable insights into the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking. The workshops offer a blend of practical experience and artistic development, ensuring that participants are well-equipped to contribute to the growing art cinema scene in Saudi Arabia.
Internationally, the Film Commission has also taken steps to broaden its scope by conducting workshops in Berlin, where 11 Saudi trainees had the opportunity to engage with prominent cinema organizations. These workshops allowed participants to gain firsthand exposure to the latest cinematic trends and advancements in film, further deepening their cultural understanding and expanding their creative horizons. This international collaboration underscores the Commission's commitment to providing a platform for local talents while encouraging global partnerships and knowledge-sharing among filmmakers.
A key highlight of the initiative is the debut of Korean Film Week in Riyadh, which runs from January 19 to 23, 2025, at Cinehouse. Supported by the Film Commission, the event offers a unique opportunity for Saudi audiences to immerse themselves in the richness of Korean culture through cinema. With screenings of acclaimed Korean films such as Cobweb and Parasite, the event provides a window into the innovative storytelling and cinematic artistry that have made Korean films a global phenomenon. In addition to the film screenings, the event includes engaging dialogue sessions that explore topics like "The Global Appeal of Korean Cinema" and the impact of Korean culture on the global film industry. Seminars featuring prominent directors and international cinema experts further facilitate understanding, interaction, and cultural communication between Saudi and Korean filmmakers.
These initiatives represent the Film Commission’s ongoing commitment to expanding the scope of Saudi cinema and fostering a dynamic film industry that is rooted in culture and creative excellence. By creating these opportunities for collaboration and growth, the Commission aims to not only support local filmmakers but also position Saudi Arabia as a global hub for cinematic innovation and cultural exchange. Through its efforts, the Film Commission hopes to attract international talent, encourage investment in the arts, and create lasting connections that will elevate Saudi Arabia’s presence on the world cinema stage.
