Riyadh, April 17, 2024, The Theater and Performing Arts Commission has announced the debut of "Zarqa Al Yamama," the first grand opera in Arabic, to be performed at the King Fahd Cultural Center, premiering on April 25. This historic event, under the patronage of Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, marks a significant milestone for Saudi culture, showcasing the richness of opera in the Arabic language and attracting art enthusiasts and audiences globally.
The libretto of "Zarqa Al Yamama" is entirely in Arabic, making it a rare and remarkable artistic phenomenon, considering that the majority of operatic works are traditionally presented in European languages. The opera stands out for its captivating performances of famous sung poems and musical passages inspired by renowned operatic compositions, intertwined with elements of Saudi music.
Sultan Al-Bazie, CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, highlighted that "Zarqa Al Yamama" is deeply rooted in Saudi heritage, presenting a well-known historical narrative in a contemporary artistic framework that aligns with modern trends and public aspirations. The collaboration between Saudi and international artists enriches the production, with Saudi poet Saleh Zamanan contributing his award-winning literary talent to the opera's libretto.
The opera narrates the tragic story of Zarqa Al Yamama, a heroine from the pre-Islamic era in the Al-Yamama region of Najd, depicting a compelling tale of conflict and tragedy within her tribe. The production promises a gripping theatrical experience, featuring cutting-edge stagecraft, sweeping orchestral movements, and captivating choral performances that offer audiences a unique cultural immersion.
